Association for Student Loan Relief Forms. Game On.

By on October 17, 2013

For companies interested in selling student loan debt relief it appears a new organization has formed, led by noted debt relief attorney Robby Birnbaum of Greenspoon Marder.

The group, Association for Student Loan Relief (AFSLR) is holding their in Las Vegas on December 12, 2013 at Mandalay Bay.

Early sponsors of the association are listed as Greenspoon Marder, AP Student Loan Relief, Debt.org, Infinity Client Solutions, CreditSoft, Frontline Debt Services, and Concussion Media. – Source

Action Financial is listed as a member, but not a sponsor. – Source

At this point membership in the association costs $100 a month as a member or $1,000 annually as a vendor member. – Source

The association does have a code of ethics members must follow. – Source

While it appears they are trying to point in a consumer facing direction I’d like to see their code of ethics also require members to openly make disclosures about services available for free from the Department of Education and make fees and services apparent. I previously wrote a guide laying out what I thought people should look for in a student loan assistance provider. You can read How to Run a Clean Student Loan Assistance Program.

The student loan assistance debt relief area will be the next version of the old debt settlement industry in my view. Even Robby Birnbaum with was heavily involved with both TASC and the AFCC is involved with AFSLR.

Marketing information for the conference sent out by Concussion Media says, “If You Are Sitting On The Fence About Going Into Business In This Industry – This Conference Could Answer All Questions” and the AFSLR website says, “We will be hosting the largest event in this fast-growing industry.”

Concussion Media appears to be involved in leads for the tax relief industry and student loans leads. – Source

But one issue that jumped out is who is Concussion Media who appears to be behind promoting the AFSLR conference and a vendor. Their website does not list any address or location. That sent me looking for more about Concussion Media.

According to public records, the Concussion Media domain name is owned by Michael Mourgides of MM Marketing Group, Inc. in West Palm Beach, Florida. The domain name was registered on June 6, 2013.

Seven other domain names are located on the same server with the concussionmedia.com site. They are:

makeyourhomeaffordable.co
myloanlenderpayday.com
paydaydebtexperts.co
student-loan-debt-help.org
studentloandebtexperts.com
united-taxgroup.com
unitedtaxgroup.co
unitedtaxgroup.net

What, no debt settlement site?

I have to applaud MM Marketing for making their domain ownership public. AFSLR does not. What I do know is the domain name was registered on August 26, 2013.

But here is where the debt relief industry seems to frequently run off the rails. While ConcussionMedia.com is promoting the association and appears to be a vendor member, MM Marketing Group, Inc. the owner of the ConcussionMedia.com domain name has not been authorized to conduct business since September 28, 2012.

Maybe it is just a horrible oversight, still.

If businesses wanted legit certification they would just go throuh the NFCC (or similar organization) or get all their workers certified through a federally/state approved certification program like the NACCC or AICCC who offer student loan counseling certifications as well as financial/credit counseling . This just another way to do things the one size fits all pump and dump way. From everything I can tell, this certification is about as legit as a professional wrestling “title”

Did you happen to see the promotion video for the event? I don’t think this is the official one though.
